When members of a faith community die, the presence of parishioners at the Funeral Mass serves as a visible and aural sign of support, compassion, and comfort. This presence brings to life Christ’s words from the Sermon on the Mount: “Blessed are they who mourn, for they will be comforted” (Matthew 5: 4).
The parish Funeral Ministry Team and Choir is comprised of parishioners willing to accompany the grieving by attending the Funeral Mass, and supporting the families’ and friends’ participation in the prayers, responses, postures and singing of the Mass. You don’t have to consider yourself a “singer” in order join this group, just be a generous heart with some time! You are an assembly member who supports by praying with the grieving. Members of this team may also serve as sacristans helping to set up for the liturgy; as extraordinary ministers of holy Communion; as lectors when the family has no one able to read; and as greeters to welcome guests to our parish. The team sits as a group so that it can be that tangible presence of Christ’s compassion through the presence of his people.
Though retired persons make up the majority of this team, these young at heart would benefit from and welcome the young in body to share in this holy work! If you are a stay-at-home mom or dad, or you normally work afternoons or evenings, consider joining this ministry. The parish schedules most funerals around 10:00 a.m., and we contact the team members through email, text, or phone tree - whichever is most convenient for the individual. Members arrive about a half hour before each funeral and attend when it fits their schedule.
